About the Book
William writes:
When my granddaughter lost her hair going through chemotherapy treatment aged four, I didn't want her to feel that the world of princesses that she loved so much was closed to her. So I wrote her a story that gave her a character in that world that she could identify with, a princess who wasn't sick, but who looked like her. Zaffia is courageous and resourceful. At a moment of crisis she meets Midnight, the black unicorn of Alashtria, and embarks on a journey of discovery that takes her far from home, into danger and the triumph that lies beyond.
The book was very much written to be read by parents or grandparents (or aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, friends!) to younger children, but it could be enjoyed by any enthusiastic independent reader aged nine or above.
I can't emphasise enough that it is not a story about being sick: it is an uplifting tale about being proud in your own skin.
